IO/UNS Newsletter [11/9]

Yun Liang - Monday, November 8, 2021
 IO/UNS Newsletter
November 9, 2021

Dear IO/UNS Community,

We can't believe November is already upon us! The semester is flying by as everyone is working hard on upcoming exams and papers.

We are excited to host a special high-level event with UNCTAD Secretary General Rebecca Grynspan, today at 1-2 PM ET. We have extra space for in-person attendance so come to join us in room 1501 IAB (or of course virutally), as Ms Grynspan discusses with SIPA Professors José Antonio Ocampo and Daniel Naujoks how she envisions UNCTAD's role promoting sustainable development integration in the world economy and COVID-19 impacts on trade, investment, and development (RSVP here).

In other news, this week marks the second half of the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow, UK. As world leaders and representatives face mounting pressure to reach an agreement on committments to avoid 1.5C of warming this week, passionate activists from around the world marched over the weekend for the "Global Day of action for Climate Justice" to demand more urgent action from global leaders. In this newsletter's event section, we provide information on how to follow along on the conversation and attend side-events organized on the margins of COP26.

In this newsletter, you will find:

  • What We’re Listening To
  • IO/UNS Student Spotlight
  • Check out the new MiA think piece on Development Futures
  • Sign Up For UNYPP SIPA Study Group

What We're Listening To

In this column, we highlight IO/UNS-related podcasts, movies, news sources, and more that might be of interest to students in our community.

This week's strikes on the margins of the COP26 negotiations saw 100,000 protestors marching under the banner of climate justice. In NPR's Short Wave podcast, Marine biologist Ayana Elizabeth Johnson discusses her Op-Ed in The Washington Post on the interlinkage between climate change and racial justice. Listen to the NPR episode "The Inseparable Link Between Climate Change and Racial Justice" here and read Ayana Johnson's Op-Ed in The Washington Post here.

Rishabh Sonkar

IO/UNS Student Spotlight

This week, please meet Rishabh Sonkar (MIA '23, EE).

I had briefly worked with UN Volunteers (UNV) organization called BetterLifeVietnam which worked on bettering the lives of marginalized children and making education accessible to them. I have worked in managerial and leadership in startups across Indian markets in sales, business strategy, consumer psychology and content marketing roles after my previous PGPM and MBA.

I am interested in learning about the role of global governance and multilateralism in shaping powerful climate outcomes towards 2030 Paris Agreement for Net Zero and beyond, and how I can contribute to that mission and beyond 2030. I wish to work in a multilateral organization like UN, World Bank, GEF, WFP as an international environmental policy leader directly affect policymaking in the space of carbon sequestration, transnational ocean water conflict resolution, fresh water management and forest/soil conservation as key drivers towards climate adaptation and mitigation and help reach the 2030 global SDG target of Net Zero set by the Paris Agreement.

Fun Facts: I could have been a Salsa dancer professionally, were if not for my past business career or future multilateral/public sector environmental career. I was a father to Cocker Spaniel, Veer until I moved out of India. Reading practical philosophy, empowering youth, advocating for justice and women's rights, making rich conversations with people from all cultures are what I'm passionate about.

We know that each of you has something to offer. Don't be shy and please fill out our questionnaire here - we'd love to shine a light on you!

Lastly, we'd like to make a correction to last week's student spotlight. Geet Chawla is pursuing a MPA degree, not MIA degree as previously mentioned.

Did you have a chance to check ouyt the latest think-piece on Multilateralism in Action? In “Reimagining Development Futures: What we can learn from UNDP’s Integrated and Systems-Driven Approaches” Haoliang Xu (MIA '94), who serves as UN Assistant Secretary-General, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Director of Bureau for Policy and Programme Support, argues that the only way we can reverse growing poverty and inequality in the face of COVID-19 is through an integrated approach that engages across both stakeholders and Sustainable Development Goals alike. While global cooperation has become more pertinent than ever, Xu argues, we also must “address systemic origins of risks”. Read Mr. Xu’s article here and learn more about the ways in which UNDP is implementing an integrated analysis in pursuit of sustainable development gains.

Incredible Commitments. How UN Peacekeeping Failures Shape Peace Processes
In-person and Online

Join us for Anjali Kaushlesh Dayal's talk on her new book "Incredible Commitments. How UN Peacekeeping Failures Shape Peace Processes".

Why do warring parties turn to United Nations peacekeeping and peacemaking even when they think it will fail? Professor Dayal asks why UN peacekeeping survived its early catastrophes in Somalia, Rwanda, and the Balkans, and how this survival should make us reconsider how peacekeeping works. She makes two key arguments: first, she argues the UN's central role in peacemaking and peacekeeping worldwide means UN interventions have structural consequences – what the UN does in one conflict can shift the strategies, outcomes, and options available to negotiating parties in other conflicts. Second, drawing on interviews, archival research, and process-traced peace negotiations in Rwanda and Guatemala, Dayal argues warring parties turn to the UN even when they have little faith in peacekeepers' ability to uphold peace agreements – and even little actual interest in peace – because its involvement in negotiation processes provides vital, unique tactical, symbolic, and post-conflict reconstruction benefits only the UN can offer.

UN Climate Change Conference UK 2021
Online

The United Nations Climate Change Conference has brought nations together for almost three decades to discuss global climate issues. Formally the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the 26th summit (COP26) will begin later this week in Glasgow, Scotland, and run from October 31st to November 12th.
The run-up to this year’s conference, originally scheduled for 2020, is especially tense due to the delay caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. As countries update their plans to reduce global emissions, the threat of the world’s temperature rising 1.5 degrees looms closer than ever. Because of this, many agree that COP26 has a unique sense of urgency.

All COP26 events can be viewed virtually by subscribing to the COP26 YouTube channel. A list of events, located on the COP26 webpage, includes a link to each live stream that will be freely available. Additionally, there will be hundreds of side events geared towards propelling COP26 discussions further, while engaging communities, businesses, and world leaders alike.

Monday, November 1 - Friday, November 12
